With the summer season fast approaching and temperature rising, the number of days people spend in the water also will quickly increase.
This year’s National Safe Boating Week kicked off Saturday with “Ready! Set! Wear It!” at West Marine on the south end of Lake Lanier.
The event has been held annually for three years by the National Safe Boating Council. This year, the Canadian Safe Boating Council also joined forces to promote the importance of wearing life jackets on the water.
Educators from West Marine and Hall County Fire Services were on hand to pass out flyers and pamphlets to customers explaining the importance of life jackets and overall water safety.
Hall County Fire Service’s marine rescue boat, along with a new personal watercraft, were on display for people to take pictures with or simply observe.
At noon, everyone in attendance of the event put on life jackets at the store’s entrance in an attempt to break the world record for most life jackets worn and inflated around the world. Last year, 1,685 participants from six countries helped to break the previous standing record.
Rachel Johnson, communications director for the National Safe Boating Council, knows the importance of life jackets to those in and on the water after working with the council for over four years.
“‘Ready! Set! Wear It!’ is an opportunity for boaters to show their support for such an important message,” she said. “If more boaters chose to wear life jackets at all times while boating, there would be (fewer) drownings, something we can all be proud of helping to achieve.”
Last year in Georgia, there were 15 deaths from boating accidents. Lt. Beverley Walker of Hall County Fire Services said wearing life jackets can save lives.
“They should be worn at all times, by all ages,” said Walker, who helped plan this year’s event.
“Drownings on Lake Lanier were very high last year, and we are working to reduce that number. People are drowning on our lake, and we want to prevent that from occurring. Visiting the lake should be a fun and enjoyable event, not a tragic one.”

We are being told by the politicians with a complicit media that the only places they can cut are Education, Police and Fire….and of course the Library. This is just fear mongering political nonsense because police, fire and libraries are local responsibilities. Education is more complicated but keep in mind that our education system is not run by the State, they are run by local school boards and the only reason for the department of education is so the State can take our local school tax money and give it back to the districts. Somebody needs to manage the process of giving us back our own locally raised tax money for education….bizarre…
The idea that we either must raise taxes or cut fire and public safety or our education budge are instead of consolidating or eliminating agencies deceitful. Clearly the politicians frame the question to condition California voters by fear mongering to vote for tax increases in State that is already the highest taxing State in the Union.
Whether you’re a Democrat, a Republican or Independent, this list of agencies has to shock you. Over the years, our politicians created this enormous pork barrel of agencies that employ about as many people as the entire State of Alaska. All of these people get salaries, medical coverage and pensions at our expense.
Creating a spending ceiling? The Republicans don’t get it. The democrats don’t get it. The Independents don’t get it. No body seems to understand.
So allow me to explain.
Suppose you come home from work and find there has been a sewer backup in your neighborhood. Your home has sewage all the way up to your ceilings. What do you think you should do? Raise the ceilings or pump out the shit?
You get to make the choice with your vote…don’t miss this opportunity.

Boaters: More Pumpouts, Cleaner Water
Coastal Environmental Services launches new, modern, Aluminum Pumpout Boat to expand clean water mission in Mystic, New London
Coastal Environmental Services (CES), a Federal non-profit 501 c3 that focuses on clean water and environmental protection is launching a new 23 foot Aluminum pumpout boat. The vessel will service boaters on the Mystic and Thames Rivers and has been specially designed as a pumpout specific boat.
With a 550 gallon holding tank, the vessel, constructed by Chester Boat Works in Chester, CT, will lend higher levels of service to boaters. The engine was installed by Atlantic Outboard in Westport, CT, supplies and electronics provided by West Marine of Mystic, CT and finish work done by Coastal Environmental Services. The vessel will usher in a new era of water protection, utilizing new designs and technologies. 75% of the vessel cost was funded by the Federal Clean Vessel Act (through the Sport Fishing and Boating Trust Fund), through the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, which provides funds to maintain clean water. The remaining 25% of the cost of the vessel was donated from generous vendors that care about environmental protection. The CT DEEP provides 75% of the operating and maintenance costs of the CES Pumpout Program.
The purpose of marine pumpouts is to keep recreational boaters’ waste out of local waterways. CES is dedicated to maintaining and improving the quality of coastal waters, which helps boaters, swimmers, fish and shellfish, and the overall environment. CES operates 4 pumpout vessels between the two rivers and all points in between, as well as 2 environmental response/research vessels.
There will be a launch ceremony for the new vessel on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 5:30 PM at Brewers Yacht Yards Mystic. Specifically, the ceremony will take place at the end of “C” dock on the large fueling platform.

Boat Accident Personal Injury Attorneys
According to statistics released by the U.S. Coast Guard, there were 4,604 recreational boating accidents reported in 2010, which resulted in 672 deaths, 3,153 injuries and property damage costs of $35.5 million. The top five primary contributing factors in these accidents were operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, and alcohol. If you or a loved one has been injured in a boating accident, Brian Loncar & Associates can help you protect your legal rights and get the compensation you deserve.
Consulting a boating accident lawyer immediately is essential if you are considering legal action to seek compensation for the costs associated with a boating related personal injury. Personal injury law is complex, especially in boating accidents, where maritime law comes into play. Certain procedures must be followed to document the accident and your injuries in order for you to have a valid claim for compensation. Further complicating matters is the fact that these procedures can vary according to where your boating accident occurred, since some waterways are regulated by state law, while others fall under the jurisdiction of the federal government. Brian Loncar is experienced in boating related personal injury cases and can guide you through that process, helping to avoid mistakes that could undermine your case.
Brian Loncar lawyers are experienced in protecting the best interests of clients through the aftermath of boating accidents and the injuries that result from them. These professionals specialize in the skillful management of boating related personal injury cases, guiding clients through the process from start to finish. In addition to helping you prepare your case, your personal injury lawyer will be knowledgeable about resources that you may need as you recover from your injury, such as medical and rehabilitation services, as well as financial assistance, if your injury has caused loss of wages or other financial difficulties. Then, when you get your day in court, your lawyer will skillfully argue your case to prove that you are entitled to compensation for the personal and financial loss caused by your boating accident.

There are several components on the boat that you cannot properly take care of by yourself and therefore, you should hire an expert to keep your boat in best shape. The components that you cannot take care of essentially include the electrical system.
Boat electrical system can be divided in several categories. Lighting, fuel management and communication are the major three categories. A general lighting system is must for any boat. Similarly, there should be a well maintained fuel maintenance system. In today’s world almost all the communication system is based on electronics and therefore there is no need to mention it separately.
General Lighting
There are several parts in the boat that are not properly lit. In the daytime, on fine day, you can move across easily without touching any lose wire.
But in the night and when it is dark, you can only rely on the general lighting system of the boat. The LED lights that act as a visual signal for other boats are also a part of this general lighting system. This is very important for the engine room. Generally the engine rooms are dark and compact; therefore, in absence of a lighting system you might face severe difficulty in rectifying any urgent problem.
Fuel Management
Though it is not directly related to electrical and electronics of the boat. Still you find several boats components that are utilized to manage the fuel. Some of the equipment are a core part of boat electric system and helps you manage the fuel consumption of the boat. These components optimize the use of the fuel and hence maintain the efficiency level of your boat.
Communication system
Boat electrical system constitutes the communication system.
When in a boat, you are alone and aloof from the world and hence there should be a strong communication system to keep you connected with the rest of the world. There are several equipments like, GPS, RADAR and chart plotter that makes the list of boats components that are used for the purpose of communication.
The boat electrical system should be properly taken care of. Not only the connectivity of the devices as well as proper care of lose wires are required; you should also hire an expert who can assist you in proper supply. Even if you do have best of components but not sufficient power supply, then it is of no use. Therefore, it is imperative that you maintain adequate power supply on your boat.
